What does N5 to N2 mean?
The Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) has multiple levels. Moving from N5 toward N2 generally means progressing from foundational Japanese to increasingly complex language used in broader everyday, academic and professional contexts.
N5 — Build the foundation
At N5, learners begin with Hiragana, Katakana, basic grammar, essential vocabulary and simple communication patterns.
N4 — Strengthen everyday Japanese
N4 develops a wider range of grammar, vocabulary, kanji, listening and reading skills. Regular practice is important for moving beyond memorized phrases.
N3 — Develop intermediate ability
N3 is an important transition point. Learners work with more natural expressions, longer passages and more demanding listening and reading tasks.
N2 — Develop advanced practical comprehension
N2 requires stronger vocabulary, grammar, kanji, reading and listening ability. Consistent exposure to authentic Japanese and targeted JLPT practice becomes increasingly important.
